GENDAI RYU KRAV MAGA AND JIU-JITSU: A MODERN FORM OF MARTIAL ARTS AND SELF-DEFENCE

Gendai Ryu Krav Maga and Jiu-Jitsu embodies a modern approach to martial arts and self-defence. This system not only equips individuals with formidable martial skills but also instills a profound sense of responsibility to use these abilities ethically. Central to our philosophy is the integration of responsible and ethical practices at every level of training, ensuring that our teachings contribute positively to individual character and community welfare.

Ethics and Integrity at the Core

Our philosophy is entrenched in the foundational principles of Bushido, the ancient Way of the Warrior, which permeates every aspect of our curriculum and instruction. These timeless principles form the bedrock of our ethical approach, guiding our students in both practice and personal conduct:

  • Rectitude (Justice): Upholding fairness and moral righteousness in all decisions and actions.
  • Courage: Demonstrating bravery and steadfastness in the face of adversity.
  • Benevolence (Mercy): Practicing kindness and compassion towards others.
  • Respect (Politeness): Maintaining a demeanor of respect and civility in all interactions.
  • Honesty (Sincerity): Ensuring transparency and truthfulness in communication and behaviour.
  • Honour: Holding oneself to the highest ethical standards and personal integrity.
  • Loyalty: Demonstrating loyalty to one’s principles and peers.
  • Character (Self-control and respect): Exercising restraint and discipline in both actions and thoughts.

CORE PRINCIPLES OF THE MODERN WARRIOR IN GENDAI RYU KRAV MAGA AND JIU-JITSU TRAINING

Adherence to these principles is what defines a practitioner of Gendai Ryu Krav Maga and Jiu-Jitsu. Our training goes beyond physical prowess to cultivate these virtues, which are essential for a modern warrior. By embracing these values, our students develop not only as martial artists but also as honorable contributors to society, capable of leading with integrity and influencing positively in various spheres of life.

Through rigorous training and a steadfast commitment to these ethical standards, Gendai Ryu Krav Maga and Jiu-Jitsu practitioners emerge as skilled defenders equipped to handle not only physical confrontations but also to navigate the complexities of modern life with honor and decency.

For Gendai Ryu Krav Maga and Jiu-Jitsu students the core concepts can be summarised in the below:

1. A Modern Warrior must show respect for all:

  • This means that practitioners should not be demonstrating dominance or superiority over weaker people in and out of the dojo. Modern Warriors should not condone bullying of any type.
  • Show Respect for those who have gone before and created the body of knowledge that we apply today.

2. A Modern Warrior must only use their skills for personal defence and defence of others when there is absolutely no other option

  • In terms of self-defence one should avoid having to fight at all costs but be willing and able to fight if there is no choice i.e. physical harm will ensue if action is not taken.
  • A modern warrior must be willing to use their skills to protect others who may not be capable of defending themselves. As such it is the duty of the modern warrior to keep their skills sharp.
  • When action is taken it must be lawful and proportionate.

3. A Modern Warrior must strive to be successful in and out of the dojo

  • The process of character development should be viewed as ongoing. As such modern warriors should strive to apply the principles of Bushido in their everyday lives to be examples for others.
  • It does not matter what your job is, you should use it as part of your character development and strive to excel at whatever vocation you choose.

4. A Modern Warrior must try to live a life of Honor

  • Whilst no one is perfect, a modern warrior must try to do the right thing wherever possible.

5. A Modern Warrior must accept reality

  • There is no point misleading people and creating the idea that they are able to defend themselves when they are being taught skills that are more “Art” ”than Martial. Whilst any physical skill development is positive, the approach of a modern warrior must put the capability to defend oneself and your loved ones above the mastery of ineffective techniques.

6. A modern warrior must adopt a physical and mental developmental approach

  • It is important to understand how we think and the way we function under stress.
  • Physical attribute development is as important as mental attribute development.

7. A Modern Warrior must embrace cross training and never stop learning

  • The world of self-defence and martial arts is packed with ego and discrimination based on issues such as lineage and traditional perceptions of superiority. The Modern Warrior should strive to mix with like-minded fellow warriors and share knowledge accordingly. As such it should be acknowledged that there are any paths that lead to self-defence and martial arts mastery. Modern Warriors should attempt to mix with fellow warriors but avoid individuals and groups that attempt to enforce the following:
  1. Limit what and where you can train
  2. Run down other systems & instructors
  3. Do not spar or practice contact
  4. Be very careful of instructors that talk a lot but will not demonstrate what they say…
